How To Operate A Motor Yacht

If you are considering buying a very large yacht or own one of the largest yachts in the world, you may be wondering what is in it for you. As a rule of thumb, you should set aside 10 percent of the value of your boat to cover the annual maintenance costs. Would you rather have a full-time crew to help you run your ship, or hire staff if necessary? 

Whether or not you need a crew on your yacht depends on several factors, but if you can operate your own yacht, you might want to consider hiring one or two crew members to simply do the many daily maintenance tasks required on large, expensive yachts. If you operate a boat over 75 feet, a full-time crew of three or four people can work at a time for a few months. 

It is important to install an autopilot that takes over the brakes and stays on course without the help of a supported crew member. 

Many motor yacht owners have jobs or other hobbies that take up time while they devote to their ship. A yacht manager will make sure the boat is clean, the entire landing gear is checked, the systems from the gearbox to the generator are checked, oil changes are made and nothing starts to fail. Preventive maintenance can save you thousands of dollars in yacht ownership in the long run and ultimately pay for itself. 

The result may be negligence in the maintenance of your boat, which leads to system failure and ultimately to a more expensive repair bill. 

If you search the prices for sailboats and compare them with the prices for yachts, you may find the difference somewhat overwhelming. For many boaters, the amenities of the yachts are worth the price, but there is no question that most yachts cost more than a few hundred thousand dollars more per year than the average boat on the market. 

Yachts have enormous annual operating costs, often running to more than a million dollars, and a yacht over a hundred feet costs as much as two million dollars a year with a little computing power. 

A superyacht is described as a personal boat, but none is the same. Nobody has the same taste or the same yacht ambitions, just as nobody has to be a personal boat. 

The desire of the supposed yacht owner is driven by the desire to entertain personal and professional colleagues on the yacht. Depending on your plans, it can be a good indicator of what type of yacht you want to buy and whether you need a crew on board. If you have never been on a yacht, you may find that the whole experience involves much more than just a few hours of sailing and a few days in the sun.
