How To Work On A Yacht

A superyacht is a large, privately owned luxury boat normally based in the Mediterranean. The management and crew of the yacht include the captain, first officer, engineer, and cook. These roles require no prior yachting experience, making it a great opportunity for inexperienced crews to step in. Training and experience are indispensable for the success of a yacht and its crew as well as for the safety and security of your yacht. 

New Zealand is a major destination for superyachts, so it is harder for candidates to find work here if they are in a busy harbor. Captains are more likely to hire stewardesses and deckhands who are in the same port as their yacht than to recruit new crews from the other side of the world. Internships that can be done in New Zealand for these jobs are usually in high-level positions such as First Officer, Engineer, and Cook. 

Most people will not have yachting experience, but the experience in the hospitality industry is usually great, especially as a stewardess. 

However, all potential yacht crews must obtain an STCW 95 certificate, which includes basic yacht training including fire and water safety training. If you are motivated, work hard and look professional, you will eventually find a job on a yacht. You can sit on the same boat with other yachts, so be sure to find one that has a great itinerary and that you can really handle. 

Depending on your position, you have different "regular" days, but you have to work hard and sometimes all week. The yacht is something of a floating hotel with few guests, so it's a bit of a hotel. However, it's worth it as you can get a paycheck and see some fantastic places around the world. 

The type of personnel required on a vessel may vary depending on the size of the yacht and the type of yacht. On a normal yacht, you have about 10 - 12 guests, but in the world of superyachts, you will probably have to deal with a large number of under crews on your yacht. Only for the larger yacht the crew can be up to 30 persons and for the smaller yacht up to 20 persons. 

To become the captain of a superyacht, you would need to be able to manage a luxury yacht up to 24 meters in length and a yacht with a maximum length of 30 meters. 

The US dollar is by far the dominant currency in the yacht industry, but you have the final say in all yacht decisions and all crew members and even guest guests are under your command. Generally, a charter yacht pays less than a private yacht when the crew is tipped, and a motor yacht usually pays more than the sailing yacht.
